Leeds United have signed six players this summer but they aren’t done yet, and a sensational return of Jonny Howson back to the club is on the cards.
Following his release from Middlesbrough today, there is talk from Jonny Howson’s brother, Daniel, that a deal for him to return to Leeds United is in place.
Graham Smyth of The Yorkshire Evening Post claims a switch is close, but not yet finalised, with Howson last playing for Leeds back in 2012 before a switch to Norwich City.
The 37-year-old is a three-club man, having made 188 appearances for Norwich, 340 for Boro, and 225 for Leeds during a 19-year career so far.

Leeds fans react to Jonny Howson’s return
Howson registered 28 goals and 22 assists for Leeds during a six-year period where he was also a captain of the club, scoring iconic goals against Carlisle United and Bristol Rovers to help get Leeds out of League One.
He was also a scorer and captain for Leeds in a 4-0 win away to Nottingham Forest during the game following Gary Speed’s passing. In so many ways, he means an incredible amount to the club’s supporters.
They have taken to X/Twitter to react to the news. One simply said: “Well this is wonderful news…”
Another remarked: “If this is true, this makes me just as happy as the players we’re signing.”
A further response read: “Great move. He’ll be a fabulous mentor for the next generation.”
Another Leeds fan added: “What a great bit of business. Another body (still got a bit to offer if needed) Freebie Home grown quota added Fair play Leeds 👏🏼👏🏼”
A number of signings this summer have got the juices flowing, but none have the feel-good factor of Howson returning in some capacity, even if in more of a coaching role with the U-21 team.
Sam Byram and Alex Cairns have important roles in the dressing room, while others like Howson’s former Leeds teammate Ben Parker are actively involved with the club.

Jonny Howson’s Championship record and sheer experience is incredible
It’s unclear whether he would have a first-team squad number and contract alongside his coaching role, but Howson’s return would bring intangibles such as leadership and experience as well.
Including 104 Premier League appearances, 111 in League One, and a further 10 in EFL play-off matches, Howson also sits fifth in the all-time Championship appearance table.
| Rank | Player | Number of clubs | Appearances |
| 1 | Albert Adomah | 6 | 526 |
| 2 | Lee Camp | 9 | 523 |
| 3 | Tom Lees | 3 | 485 |
| 4 | Lukas Jutkiewicz | 6 | 473 |
| 5 | Jonny Howson | 3 | 465 |
| 6 | Richard Keogh | 4 | 457 |
| 7 | Chris Martin | 8 | 456 |
| 8 | Luke Chambers | 2 | 455 |
| 9 | David Marshall | 6 | 449 |
| 10 | Chris Gunter | 3 | 429 |
He is one of the most senior figures in the English game, with 753 professional appearances to his name. That experience would benefit the young stars like Harry Gray immensely.
If Leeds play things right, he could also be a huge presence around the training ground with the other more senior players at the club, imparting wisdom on a Leeds squad who benefitted from Josuha Guilavogui in such a role.
