Champions League nights often throw up the craziest of surprises, and on Wednesday night, Leeds United fans looked on in shock during Liverpool’s return to form.
Arne Slot, who almost joined Leeds in February 2023, had watched his Premier League champions lose four games in a row. Yet, on Wednesday night, they produced a 5-1 hammering of Eintracht Frankfurt.
Liverpool had actually gone behind in the game, but Slot’s men recovered and eased to a win. Slot had even dropped Mo Salah from the starting line-up in an attempt to change his side’s fortunes, of late.
But before Liverpool’s five-goal onslaught, which included Hugo Ekitike scoring on his return to the German side, Rasmus Kristensen had put Frankfurt in the lead with a precise finish from a tight angle.

Leeds fans stunned by Kristensen’s Champions League goal
It was a brilliant finish from the Denmark international, who officially left Leeds permanently in April. The £7.7m deal came after Kristensen enjoyed a brilliant loan spell with the Bundesliga club during 2024-25.
Kristensen is no stranger to a goal, having scored three times for Leeds during the 2022-23 season prior to relegation, and his first loan move to Roma in 2023-24. But Frankfurt couldn’t hold onto their lead.
Even with Germany international and former Leeds defender Robin Koch wearing the armband, Frankfurt were put to the sword by Slot’s reds. Nevertheless, Kristensen’s goal left Leeds supporters stunned.
Kristensen’s goal comes off the back of Leeds’ 2-0 defeat to Burnley, in which Leeds had 19 attempts at goal compared to Burnley’s four. With Leeds struggling in front of goal, one fan posted, “Just our luck”.
Another took to X to write: “Our old friend Rasmus has just scored against them. Pretty good goal, too. Funny old game, innit.” Another said, “let that sink in”, alongside a picture of a sink at the front door.
Rasmus Kristensen’s numbers since Leeds United move in 2022
When Leeds signed Kristensen, many saw it as a coup. Leeds had beaten Champions League clubs to land his signature, with Dortmund linked at the time. West Ham had tried to sign Kristensen beforehand.
With Luke Ayling struggling for form, many saw it as the ideal signing. A warrior-like figure. But it quickly went wrong and by the last third of the season, Ayling was back in the side and Kristensen on the bench.
| Season | Club | Games | Minutes | G+A | CS | Wins |
| 2022-23 | Leeds | 30 | 2290 | 4 | 3 | 8 |
| 2023-24 | Roma | 31 | 1878 | 3 | 8 | 16 |
| 2024-25 | Frankfurt (loan) | 43 | 3547 | 10 | 9 | 20 |
| 2025-26 | Frankfurt | 6 | 421 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
A dismal loan at Roma alongside Diego Llorente under Jose Mourinho saw Kristensen struggle, but his move to Germany has reignited his career, and ahead of the World Cup, his place in the National Team.
