Leeds United hero Kalvin Phillips made his first competitive Man City appearance in 645 days on Wednesday night against Huddersfield Town.
It’s been a long wait for Kalvin Phillips, who remained a Man City player past the transfer deadline following loan spells with Ipswich Town and West Ham United in recent seasons after leaving Leeds United.
In fact, Pep Guardiola called Phillips overweight publicly and that may have been a factor in why some reports stated that Phillips wanted to come back to Leeds this summer.
The 29-year-old remains under contract until 2028. Earlier in the year, we revealed that Leeds could target a loan deal for Phillips in a bid to get around the cost of an expensive transfer deal. But nothing materialised this summer.
It’s possible that Leeds could be in the mix for the Man City midfielder in January or beyond after it was claimed that Leeds made a late check for Phillips on deadline day but he remained in the end.

Leeds fans defend Erling Haaland’s Man City comment
Despite French giants Lyon also considering a move for Phillips, Guardiola made the decision to retain him and Phillips is in Man City’s 25-man Premier League squad this season.
He’s had bad luck with injuries, too. This summer, Phillips has recovered from an achilles issue amid the links to Leeds. It was also stated late in the window that Man City reportedly considered paying Phillips off.
That report came earlier in the summer, while Leeds United News sources have since confirmed to us more recently that it was a consideration late in the window for Man City and Phillips.
Regardless, he’s a City player now. However, Leeds fans have plenty of love for him. A post from Erling Haaland was criticised by many, but not Leeds fans who rushed to Phillips’ defence instead.
Another added: “Was mint at Leeds so we called him the Yorkshire Pirlo.”
Another stated that the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ praise was warranted, adding: “Should of seen him at leeds.”
A final response read: “Before City this lad was the player of the tournament for England at the Euros. One of the best holding midfielders in the country. Praying he finds his form again. Deserves more respect. The Yorkshire Pirlo.”
Simon Grayson and Liam Cooper loved Phillips’ return, among others who were pleased to see him playing football again after some difficult seasons.

Pep Guardiola’s comments on Kalvin Phillips post-Huddersfield
Speaking via The Manchester Evening News post-match, Guardiola explained some brief thoughts on Phillips’ return to City and his cameo against the Terriers.
He was jeered by the Huddersfield fans for his Leeds connections and he was then swiftly back to return to London on Wednesday night to be with his family.
“It’s a good moment,” said Guardiola. “Yesterday he was a father to Ari Phillips and he came this morning from London and is now going back to London to his wife and the kids.
“He came back for a few minutes because we didn’t know the position but the game was controlled. They didn’t make a lot of efforts in behind and that was really good.”
Phillips is still tipped for a Leeds return at some stage by Graeme Bailey, but he will hope to get regular enough minutes in a City shirt again this season.
