Qatari side Al-Rayyan are reportedly closing in on a move to sign Leeds United striker Rodrigo and a deal could be announced as soon as “today” – and Leeds Live have reported that Al-Rayyan will pay between £3.5m and £4m.

The 32-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his Leeds deal and was always expected to go. The Spain star has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs, and a return to Spain. Victor Orta was linked, with Sevilla.

But Fabrizio Romano took to Twitter on Wednesday morning. The Italian transfer expert posted, in an exclusive, that Rodrigo is set to go to Al-Rayyan. A deal may be completed today for Rodrigo, who is actually undergoing a medical.

Leeds Live share an update on Romano’s report. They reveal the transfer fee that will see Rodrigo swap Yorkshire for the Middle East. It is said Al-Rayyan will pay Leeds a fee between £3.5m and £4m, given his age and contract.

It is a bargain for the Qatar side Al-Rayyan, who’re managed by gaffer Leonardo Jardim – and have ex-Lille and Lyon midfielder Thiago Mendes, as well as Morocco’s World Cup star Sofiane Boufal. Rodrigo is set to be their star player.

It is a tiny fee, but it is a necessary transfer. Leeds need him to go. His wages are far too big for a club in the second tier. So, he needs to be sold. The length of his deal reduces value, as did the drop. So, he is set for a Qatari move.

Having earned a place in Spain’s squad for the end-of-season Nations League games, a move to Qatar probably ends any chance he had of winning a place in Spain’s Euro 2024 squad. It is does come as a bit of a surprise pick.
