David Prutton has written in his Yorkshire Evening Post column that Leeds United is probably “the best place” for Sam Byram to come and kickstart his career – and suggests a move for the free agent makes sense this summer.
Byram, 29, is currently training at Leeds after his contract with Norwich expired this summer. He even featured in the 2-0 loss to Monaco in York on Saturday, playing on the left side of defence for the last 30 minutes. No.25, again.
The Leeds academy product left the club back in January 2016 to join West Ham. But injuries have followed Byram ever since his Leeds exit. Seven and a half years have passed since departing Elland Road – playing just 98 games.
Byram needs a place that can offer him a bit of stability after leaving Norwich. A return home would do that. He may not be the player he once was given the injuries – but he is versatile, knows Leeds, and manager Daniel Farke, too.

He managed Byram while at Norwich and having brought him on for 30 minutes on Saturday, Farke raved about the free agent – but did not say if he would sign. Ex-Leeds midfielder Prutton outlined why a move suits all parties.
“He has had injuries, miles on the clock but the player that we know Sam Byram can be is a worthy addition to what Leeds can do. Financially it might make more sense when you’ve got a player who is in a slightly different position.
“He can’t come in and start commanding everything he wants. If Sam is looking to kickstart his career then a place he knows all about, a club that would hopefully cater, care for his needs could potentially be the best place for him.”
David Prutton: Leeds is the best place for Sam Byram to kickstart career

Leeds are well-stocked on the right side of defence. Luke Ayling is likely to provide cover for Cody Drameh at right-back. Cover could be brought in, but it is hardly a necessity. Perhaps, Farke is looking at Ayling as a central option.
Leeds have lost Rasmus Kristensen, Diego Llorente and Robin Koch – three players who can play on the right side of central defence. Charlie Cresswell is back, and Ayling may be his competition. Byram can play in other areas, too.
Right wing at times, but he may no longer be as explosive as required, these days. Most importantly though, is he could be an option at left-back. He played there on Saturday. Leeds are lacking options on the left, Byram can help.
