Leeds target available on a free and Ilia Gruev could inadvertently play a key role in his signing

Kai Wagner is set to leave MLS side Philadelphia Union on a free transfer with Leeds United among the clubs to have shown interest in the left-back, and Ilia Gruev could play a role in any potential signing.

Starring in the MLS over the last four years, Wagner has established himself as possibly the best left-back in the League. But he is about to leave the Union, with his contract due to expire in December.

With the MLS season running differently to most Leagues, contracts end in the winter – rather than the summer. The Athletic say talks to extend his deal have “gotten nowhere”. Leeds have shown interest.

They also report that Greek giants AEK Athens have made an offer. Last month, Gianluca Di Marzio said Wagner has also been the subject of interest from West Ham, Brentford and other European clubs.

A man in demand and even more so, given he is going on a free. But Leeds may have an ace up their sleeve, if they do go and make a move to sign Wagner in the coming few weeks and maybe, months.

Wagner set to leave: Gruev could help Leeds in potential signing

That comes in the form of another new Leeds signing, Gruev. The Bulgarian is struggling for game time after his £4m move to Elland Road from Werder Bremen. But, Gruev’s representation could help us.

TransferMarkt state that Gruev is represented by Feel Soccer GmbH. The same agency that looks after Wagner. Leeds will have had to deal with that agency in order to bring Gruev to Elland Road in August.

Clearly, those links are strong given Gruev completed the move – and will have been left on good terms. If Leeds do make a move for Wagner, having that relationship might just help get a deal over the line.
