Leeds should make move to sign goalkeeper who Jose Mourinho called ‘fantastic’ – opinion

Leeds United could be in the market for two new goalkeepers this summer.

Illan Meslier is widely expected to depart for pastures new after a difficult end to the campaign that led to relegation, while Joel Robles‘ future remains very much uncertain.

Robles was among four players scheduled for release on last month’s retained list, but has been invited back for pre-season training and could still be offered a new deal.

However, he is also attracting interest from elsewhere with former club Everton among his possible list of suitors after he impressed between the sticks in Leeds’ final four matches of last season.

As such, Leeds may need to add two new shotstoppers to their ranks, and someone who they should try make a move for is Asmir Begovic, who is currently a free agent.

Leeds should move for Begovic if Robles leaves

Leeds are currently in talks with Newcastle United over the signing of Karl Darlow, and with a valuation of £5 million, he would surely be number one if he came in.

It is also important for Leeds to have a quality number two, though, and Begovic certainly fits that bill after a long career at the top level.

The 36-year-old has over 250 Premier League appearances under his belt, including 33 at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho, who labelled him as ‘fantastic’ during their time together.

He is the sort of goalkeeper a manager would have no qualms about throwing into the starting XI if the number one was either unavailable, or out of form.

With all that said, Leeds will have to get a move on if they are to try for Begovic, with Luton Town and Queens Park Rangers currently the most likely destinations.

If the Robles decision continues to drag out much longer, then Begovic should be who they go for.
