Leeds sack Marsch: Smyth says Corberan not front runner for job, decision this week

Graham Smyth has reported on the Yorkshire Evening Post’s website that Leeds United will look to replace Jesse Marsch at some point this week – but that the front runner for the vacant role is not West Brom boss Carlos Corberan.

Football site 90Min suggested earlier on Monday that Corberan was indeed, on pole to take the job. However, the 39-year-old is only 16 games into his stint at the Hawthorns. There were question marks over leaving so soon for Leeds.

Of course, it would see the Spanish gaffer return to Elland Road after leaving the club in the summer of 2020. He joined Leeds in 2017 – working as the club’s U21 manager, and as assistant to Marcelo Bielsa. He became Huddersfield boss.

Two great years with the Terriers was followed by a poor spell at Olympiakos. But, he is back at his best with West Brom, taking the Baggies from Championship wilderness to promotion hopefuls. Understandably, he is a contender.

However, Smyth reports he is not the top name on the shortlist. Indeed, Smyth says the club are looking to appoint a manager with more experience. He also says that Leeds fans can expect an announcement come the end of the week.

“Club sources say the board are aligned on the direction they wish to take next and fans can expect to hear from Elland Road decision makers this week as they map out the immediate post-Marsch future,” Smyth reported on Monday.

He continued: “The YEP understands the Spaniard is not currently the frontrunner for the vacancy, with the board aiming to bring in experience, but he remains highly thought of at Elland Road and a viable option.”

So, who could it be? Well, the club have been linked with Steven Gerrard and Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou – as per TMW. But it looks unlikely Postecoglou will leave Celtic at this time. Gerrard is out of work, but fans have reservations.

It is unknown who Leeds are currently looking at, other than Corberan and the two aforementioned names. Victor Orta’s connections in Spain and around Europe could see Leeds delve into the overseas market once again for a boss.
