Leeds United simply must win promotion if they want to sign 26-year-old now

Reports have emerged on Tuesday that Tottenham Hotspur have slapped a £20m price tag on Joe Rodon as he continues to shine on loan at Leeds United – and there is only one way we strike a deal.

Rodon, 26, has been in wonderful form for Leeds this season. The Wales defender has been a leader in defence as the Whites attackers put teams to the sword. He has helped Leeds keep five clean sheets.

Reports emerged on Tuesday, dictating how much Leeds would have to spend if they wanted to land Rodon on a permanent basis. TeamTalk say sources have indicated to them that Spurs want a £20m fee.

They also claim that Spurs are open to the permanent sale of Rodon – despite the North London side struggling at centre-back following Cristian Romero’s red card and Micky van de Ven’s hamstring issue.

Leeds need to sign Rodon. But for two reasons, a move for the Welshman surely hinges on the Whites getting promoted back to the Premier League at the first attempt. Leeds currently sit in third place.

The first of those two reasons is a financial one. The Championship is bound by tougher Financial Fairplay rules. Parachute payments are reduced. As a second-tier club, Leeds will have a limited budget.

If Leeds are going to justify spending a huge £20m on a defender, then they need to be in the Premier League. Yes, Leeds spent big on the likes of Joel Piroe and Ethan Ampadu. But, £20m is another story.

Secondly, for Rodon himself. His form already will prove to him that he is a Premier League player. Other top-tier sides will see Rodon impressing at Leeds. Premier League football is needed to convince Rodon.
