Leeds have told top-flight club they will have to pay £1.75m to sign Elland Road teen

Italian outlet Tutto Salernitana claim Leeds United have informed Serie A side Salernitana that if they want to sign Leo Hjelde in the coming weeks, then they will need to part with a fee of £1.75m. Hjelde started in Oslo last week.

Hjelde, 19, is back at Leeds this summer after spending the last six months on loan in the Championship with Matt Taylor’s Rotherham United. He impressed, since representing Norway’s U21 side in the European Championships.

Last Wednesday, he started against Manchester United before being taken off at the break. The ex-Celtic and Ross County defender has a chance of breaking into Daniel Farke’s side this season. Junior Firpo is more than likely to go.

Hjelde might be the club’s starting left-back next season, as things stand. Pascal Struijk is also in with a shout, as we edge closer towards the start of the 23-24 season. But Hjelde may decide to leave Leeds before a ball is kicked.

Corriere dello Sport, via Tutto Mercato Web, said in June that Salernitana were looking at Hjelde. Now, Leeds have told the Serie A side how much they will have to pay a fee of £1.75m to consider the sale of Hjelde. One to watch.

Leeds would surely be better off keeping Hjelde. Clearly, a player with talent and certainly one that can do it in the Championship. But it is more that Leeds are lacking on the left flank and Hjelde could be the man to solve that issue.

To sell him for less than £2m, it would be a mistake. If clubs are going to come in for Hjelde, then a fee far north of that figure should be requested. But simply, Leeds should keep Hjelde and give him a chance to shine this season.
