Leeds eye £7m deal for star, he blew Robert Snodgrass away after 2018 breakthrough

Leeds United are one of a number of clubs reportedly looking to raid Carlos Corberan’s West Brom to sign Grady Diangana this summer – a player that blew Robert Snodgrass away after he broke into West Ham’s team in 2018.

Back in 2018-19, Diangana broke into the West Ham side under Manuel Pellegrini – playing 21 times at senior level. He scored two goals in an 8-0 Cup win over Macclesfield Town, and got a Premier League assist against Burnley.

He was loaned to West Brom for 2019-20, helping Slaven Bilic’s side gain promotion to the Premier League – having a hand in 15 goals during 31 games. Injury did hamper his game time. He was signed permanently by the Baggies.

But in his next 98 games for the Baggies, he has managed seven goals and four assists. He has failed to live up to the early hype and West Brom want to cut their losses. The Express & Star say Leeds are keen, with £7m needed.

During his breakthrough season at West Ham, Diangana was a teammate of ex-Leeds hero Snodgrass. Discussing his potential, in a season in which Diangana came in alongside Declan Rice, Snodgrass declared himself impressed.

“Grady has got great ability,” Snodgrass told West Ham’s website. “Against Macclesfield, he brought that freshness, he drives at people. He’s listening, he wants to learn. He’s working hard for the team too and that’s what it takes.”

Diangana is a player with enormous potential, but is a risk given his injuries – and his lack of form recently. Perhaps, he just needs a change. Leeds should only move if the club do end up selling a number of the club’s current options.

Leeds have seven wingers on the books. Dan James, Helder Costa and Ian Poveda have returned from loans. Willy Gnonto, Jack Harrison, Cree Summerville and Luis Sinisterra remain. Gnonto, Harrison and Costa are likely to leave.

But nothing has materialised so far. In fact, the wide areas of the Leeds squad are actually well-stocked. Even at left-back, with Junior Firpo, Stuart Dallas and Leo Hjelde. More players need to go before signings are brought in.
