Kyle Bartley gave glowing verdict of Leeds manager target Carlos Corberan in 2022

West Brom boss Carlos Corberan is one of a number of names being linked with a move to Leeds United – and Kyle Bartley gave his verdict on the Spanish gaffer, labeling him “different class” when discussing his tactical know how.

Corberan, 39, is currently impressing after returning to English football at The Hawthorns. Clocking up 16 games as manager of the Baggies, Corberan has won 11 of his 16 games. He has taken West Brom into the play-off positions.

It comes after leaving Leeds in the summer of 2020 to embark on his first, major managerial role. He took over at Huddersfield, taking the Terriers to the Championship play-off final in 2021-22. He then joined Greek side Olympiakos.

But he struggled in Greece, returning to England at West Brom. Corberan has been strongly linked with a return to Leeds, the club he left to join Huddersfield after working as U21 manager – and as an assistant under Marcelo Bielsa.

Football site 90Min say he is a front runner, while Graham Smyth disagrees on YEP’s website – but does still state he is in the mix. Ex-Leeds defender Bartley gave his verdict on Corberan earlier this season – praising his tactical knowledge.

“His tactical knowledge is absolutely different class,” Bartley said in November 2022, as per Birmingham World. “It’s something like I’ve never seen in my career. Him and his staff have been absolutely fantastic since he came in.”

Leeds need a manager that has experience. Spanish boss Corberan has only really had three big spells in management. Impressing at Huddersfield over two years, struggling at Olympiakos and then a 16-game stint at West Brom, so far.

But, where Corberan trails other names linked with the Leeds job, he makes up for it elsewhere. He knows Leeds, he knows the club. He has a good connection with a number of the players, after his previous stint under icon Bielsa.

Leeds could do a lot worse than bringing Corberan back to the club less than three years after leaving Elland Road. But, with the perilous position Leeds find themselves, the Whites need a manager with experience – one they can trust.
