Leeds United are among the clubs who have been pushing for Swansea City striker Joel Piroe without success in recent weeks.
That is according to Alan Nixon, who was responding to a question on Twitter about where he sees Piroe ending up this summer.
Nixon named Leeds and Leicester as the two clubs who have been pushing in recent weeks for the 23-year-old, though neither have had any success as of yet.
He also added that Piroe could still remain at Swansea if clubs aren’t willing to meet the asking price that has been set, which according to the Daily Mail, is around the £15 million mark.
Piroe held crunch talks with the Swans at the back end of last week with just 12 months remaining on his current deal, in which he reportedly has no intention of extending.
Leeds pushing for Piroe without success
It is clear that Swansea are not going to be bullied into selling their talisman at anything less than he is worth this summer, regardless of his contract situation.
Swansea have clearly used Coventry City’s sale of Viktor Gyokeres as a benchmark for Piroe, with the big Swedish striker having departed the Sky Blues for £20 million already this summer.
Like Piroe, Gyokeres had enjoyed back-to-back seasons of prolific goalscoring returns in the Championship, while also having just a year left on his contract.
Leeds are in desperate need of a reliable goalscorer this summer and clearly this sort of fee is the going rate to find it, with former Swansea boss Russell Martin having described him as ‘outstanding’ during their time together.
The Whites must now decide whether to pay it, perhaps look abroad for someone cheaper, or even a Premier League loan.
