Leeds United’s defeat to Portsmouth on Sunday lunchtime has blown the entire race for promotion wide open and even though The Whites remain in first, there are fears of an implosion.
It was around this stage last season that Daniel Farke’s side got themselves into the promotion places before throwing it away in the final games, with defeats to the likes of Blackburn and 4-0 away at QPR.
Going into Sunday’s game, Leeds had gone 17 games unbeaten but faced the prospect of a lunchtime kick-off. Midday kick-offs have proved to be a bit of a bogey for Leeds this season, for some reason.
It proved to be the case once again on Sunday as Joel Piroe missed two glorious chances and in typical Championship fashion, Portsmouth went down the other end and scored through striker Colby Bishop.
Josuha Guilavogui attempts to appease Leeds United fans
With the memory of last season’s dismal run-in and eventual play-off final defeat to Southmpton still fresh in the minds of Leeds supporters, there is concern of another run-in that kills off Leeds’ season.
But Josuha Guilavogui has looked to unify concerned Leeds supporters with a determined squad keen to put things right on Wednesday night, when The Whites play host to rivals Millwall at Elland Road.
Guilaovgui posted on X: “We need you on Wedsneday. We are United. We are Marching On Together.”
Neil Warnock comments show it is no sign to panic for Leeds fans
Farke’s predecessor Neil Warnock was on Sky Sports punditry duties for the game and he was asked what Farke would do behind the scenes now, after suffering what could be a game-changing defeat on Sunday.
Warnock said Farke would let the dust settle and try to move on quickly. The veteran boss highlighted how many chances Leeds had and suggested Farke won’t have been that disappointed with the display.
Indeed, if Leeds are awarded a penalty for a foul on Dan James, if Joel Piroe scores either of his golden chances or if Junior Firpo equalises with his two chances, then Leeds are deservedly back in the game.
But ultimately, it was just one of those days. The Leeds squad need to be reminded that they to go 28 games unbeaten was always going to be unlikely and a defeat or two is fine, if they bounce back.
