Former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has kept his cards close to his chest when asked to describe his old club in one word.
Jesse Marsch was in charge of Leeds at the start of their last season in the Premier League, before leaving with the club destined for relegation.
His successor, Daniel Farke, will be hoping that he can avoid the same fate as he prepares to take on Liverpool in a crucial clash.
Marsch, who is currently preparing Canada for the World Cup, always faced an uphill battle at Leeds, having succeeded Marcelo Bielsa, one of the most revered figures in the club’s history.
Now, the American has provided a cryptic response when asked to describe the club in one word.

Jesse Marsch gives guarded response when asked to describe Leeds United
Speaking to The Athletic, in a post on their Instagram account, Marsch was asked to describe the West Yorkshire club in one word.
Marsch decided to use an idiomatic phrase, as opposed to a single word, calling Leeds a “ball of wax” after spending two partial seasons at the club.
Although Marsch’s exact meaning isn’t clear, the idiom, a ball of wax, can have a variety of different interpretations. The first is to represent “everything”, for example, Leeds needed a win against Chelsea, and they came home with the whole ball of wax.
Alternatively, another definition, which appears to be more appropriate, is similar to “a different kettle of fish”, meaning it is on another level. For example, managing Leeds is a different ball of wax.
Another use of the phrase can also mean something that fundamentally remains the same, for example, no matter who is in charge, Leeds are the same ball of wax. Only Marsch knows what he meant with his reply.

Former Leeds United boss reflects on Premier League challenge
In a longer, written interview with The Athletic, Marsch opened up on his time in the Premier League in more detail.
According to the Canada manager, the constant churn of managers in the English top-flight put him off taking the job at Southampton, shortly after he left his position at Elland Road.
“The one year (2022-23 season) that I was in the Premier League, there were 14 (coaches fired), right? And that’s the highest ever.
What Arne Slot said when Leeds tried to hire him in 2023 🤔
“How’s a manager ever going to build anything if he has a six-month, eight-month lifespan?” Marsch said.
“That’s why I wasn’t sure about Southampton,” before adding, “When I was out of football for a while, all I was doing was evaluating, ‘Where could work?’ Not, ‘Where could I win?’ but, ‘Where could I work?’ And that’s what landed me (with Canada), which I’m very thankful for.”
