A brief cameo appearance from Harry Gray provided the sweetest lathering of icing on top of a very tasty Leeds United cake as Elland Road gorged down on that belated return to the Premier League.
Included in the senior squad for the very first time, Daniel Farke insisted as the fireworks banged and the champagne popped that handing a 16-year-old academy graduate a few minutes at the end was not merely a ‘gift’.
More a reward for Harry Gray’s fine work on the training pitch. The impression he has made behind the scenes at Thorp Arch, and the professionalism he appears to share in spades with older brother Archie.
And while Gray only played the final ten minutes or so – introduced in the dying embers for Brenden Aaronson with Leeds United already six goals to the good against Stoke City – there was still enough time for a few neat touches from a teenager who clearly not overawed by such an occasion.

Harry Gray impresses Jermaine Beckford on Leeds United debut
Jermaine Beckford, the former Leeds striker working in his punditry role for LUTV, quickly came to understand, while watching the latest member of the Gray clan, to understand why Harry is so highly regarded at the Yorkshire giants.
“Young Harry Gray was absolutely fantastic when he came on,” Beckford smiles.
Some have suggested that Harry Gray could actually exceed Archie’s own achievements in a Leeds shirt. The latter was a regular under Farke last season before his £35 million switch to Tottenham Hotspur.
It remains to be seen whether the 2025/26 campaign – one Leeds are now destined to spend amongst English football’s elite – will see the youngest of the Grays start to feature more regularly on the senior stage.
Gray, for the meantime, became the 28th different player to feature for Leeds in their promotion-securing campaign, alongside fellow teenagers Sam Chambers, Charlie Crew and James Debayo.
“There are so many elements, so many people that are involved in making this a success,” Beckford adds. “Absolutely fantastic. I am so pleased and so proud that they were finally able to do it.”
“The day was made for [Gray to make his debut],” Farke explains when asked about the though precess behind the striker’s inclusion.
“But there are no gifts. I don’t like to praise a young lad too much too early. We liked what we saw on the training pitch. He has earned his position in the squad with hard work and good performances in training.
“Let’s be careful not to praise him too much [but Harry Gray is] impressive for a 16-year-old boy. Ap roud day for him and his family. It’s important to give him space to develop.”
Four-goal Joel Piroe urges Gray to continue developing at Elland Road
Of course, the back pages were dominated by another Leeds striker on Monday morning.
Joel Piroe scored four goals inside 41 minutes as a thrilling first-team display tore Stoke limb from limb.
Piroe, who overtakes Norwich City’s Borja Sainz at the top of the scoring charts, was keen to use his post-match interview as a way of imparting a few pearls of wisdom on a teenager just beginning his footballing journey.
“We congratulated [Harry Gray],” says Piroe, his rapid-fire quadruple laying the foundations for the 16-year-old to step off the bench later on in a joyous afternoon. “Of course, we made it possible as well for him to get the chance, get his minutes, and we are very happy for him as well.
“He has tasted now how it feels to play in this beautiful stadium, how it feels when everyone gets going as well.
“So it should just trigger him to want more.”
