Javi Gracia says he could use Leeds player in new position, not played there this term

Javi Gracia has told Thursday’s press conference – as per the club’s YouTube – that he could use Willy Gnonto as a striker for Leeds United, after Italy manager Roberto Mancini suggested Gnonto could be used up top for his country.

This week, Mancini commented on his lack of options in the final third – with a number of options injured. He name dropped Italy star Gnonto, stating that the Leeds winger could play up front if required to do so for his national side.

Gnonto, 19, has been superb this season, for Leeds. He was benched against Chelsea, after perhaps a recent down turn in form of late. But, he has instantly become a fan favourite at Leeds and should be reinstated against Brighton.

With Gracia renowned for sometimes using two up top and preferring a 4-4-2 system at Watford, Gnonto could be the one that partners the likes of Rodrigo, Patrick Bamford or Georgie Rutter up top. He was asked about Mancini’s claim.

“It is a good option [to play Willy up top]. When he played against Chelsea, he came on as a second forward. Then, we put him on the left. But in both positions, he can make a difference. His qualities are good as a striker or a winger.”

Using Gnonto up top could be an option given the lack of speed in the middle of Brighton’s defence. Turning the likes of Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster would put Leeds on the front foot, especially when countering. Gnonto has speed.

If Leeds are going to get anything against Brighton then it is through speed against the Brighton centre-backs. So, it might be in Gracia’s best interests to use Gnonto up top – and heed Mancini’s suggestion. Another massive game.
