Roberto Mancini has told Il Messaggero that Leeds United star Willy Gnonto can be used as a centre-forward rather than out wide – despite being used as a winger during his time at Elland Road, since joining the club last summer.
Gnonto, 19, has made a stunning start to life at Leeds. Signed on deadline day in the summer, Gnonto was already a fully-fledged Italy international. Leeds had planned to sign Gnonto in January, or even at the end of the season.
But having failed to bring in Cody Gakpo and Bamba Dieng, Leeds moved for Gnonto. A bargain at £4m, he has been a revelation – scoring four goals, including a brace against Cardiff and one against rivals Manchester United.
Gnonto has only been used on the left side of the attack by Jesse Marsch and now, Javi Gracia. But Mancini spoke about Gnonto’s ability to play as a centre-forward, when discussing how a number of his Italy players are injured.
“Ciro Immobile is out, Giacomo Raspadori is in doubt. We don’t have a regular starter except for Gnonto who plays a little more consistently for Leeds United. He can play as a centre-forward,” Mancini said, to Il Messaggero.

Gracia and Leeds should be listening. Rodrigo has been injured and while there are hopes he could return to play against Brighton this weekend, it might be too soon for a start. Patrick Bamford was missing against Chelsea.
Georgie Rutter has shown glimpses of quality so far but is yet to score since his club-record move. Leeds need goals and a centre-forward to get himself on the score sheet. Perhaps, Gracia should try Gnonto as a striker.
Leeds take on Brighton on Saturday in what will be a tough game. Gracia’s momentum has subsided after the win over Southampton – having lost to Fulham and Chelsea. He needs a spark and Gnonto up to could give him that.
