With one more round of Premier League fixtures left in 2025, the state of play is this. Leeds United sit in 16th place, four games unbeaten and six points above the relegation zone.

It’s a position that Daniel Farke would have jumped at, had he been given the chance to be six points ahead of 18th place in the summer. Wolves are all but relegated, with just two points from 17 matches.

Burnley need a miracle now, having only secured 11 points and are seven adrift at the turn of the year. However, Scott Parker’s side did finally stop their run of defeats with a draw against Bournemouth.

But with the belief that Burnley and Wolves are down, it is about avoiding the final relegation spot. Forest’s 1-0 defeat to Fulham sees them sit in 17th, five points above Nuno’s struggling West Ham.

Jamie Carragher delivers his verdict on the race to avoid 18th

Leeds take on Sunderland away from home on Sunday afternoon, with the Whites keen to go into 2026 with their unbeaten run intact. Sunderland will be without some of their key players, who are at AFCON.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Fulham’s 1-0 win, Carragher picked who he expects will avoid finishing in 18th place. He thinks Forest have enough to survive, and the gap between Leeds and West Ham is telling.

“I know there’s still a long way to go between West Ham and Leeds. I’ve got real confidence in Nottingham Forest and the quality of the players that they’ve got to get out of trouble,” Carragher said.

“But I just think Leeds and West Ham is one to really keep an eye on. And as I said, that points gap there right now is a real worry,” Carragher added, admitting he is concerned for West Ham’s form currently.

Why Leeds United fans can start to feel a bit confident…

Leeds fans will be delighted with their side and manager Daniel Farke after such a brilliant run, but Leeds fans can also feel confident about survival come May 2026 because of the upcoming fixture list.

Of the teams that are in and around Leeds, the Whites will host games against Burnley, Wolves, Brentford, Fulham and Nottingham Forest during the second half of the season. All five games at Elland Road.

Leeds have had it tough in the first half of the season, forced to go away from home in the search for points against their direct rivals. With the added boost of Elland Road in 2026, Leeds have a great chance.

But to begin with, it is all about avoiding defeat at Wearside against a weakened Sunderland side that were rivals for Leeds last season. Dan James and Sean Longstaff are likely to continue to miss out.
