Sean McGurk’s permanent move from Leeds United to Swindon Town came as a surprise late on Thursday night, as the playmaker awaits his professional debut – and Jamie Carragher reacted.
McGurk, 20, leaves Leeds without ever making a senior outing for the Whites following his move from Wigan in 2021. But, he did play 48 times for the second string at Elland Road, having a hand in 17 goals.
This term, McGurk has starred in Premier League 2 – scoring four goals in eight games, laying on three assists. Leeds fans were made to wait for the signing of Connor Roberts on loan from Burnley, yesterday.
It came after Ian Poveda had made the permanent switch to Sheffield Wednesday. That was expected to be all of the business done by us, ins and outs. Just before midnight, there was another announcement.
The club confirmed that McGurk had ended his three-year stint at Leeds and had moved to League Two side Swindon Town – who sit in 14th place. McGurk took to Instagram following his move to the Robins.

There is a feeling among Leeds fans that letting McGurk go is a mistake. With Poveda leaving the club, there might have been a gap on the bench that the red-haired playmaker could have then exploited.
But instead, he has moved out and on a permanent basis in order to get his career going. Swindon were busy on deadline day, also bringing in the outspoken Harry McKirdy. McGurk has the platform to shine.
Responding on his Instagram post, Carragher wished him luck – with McGurk a teammate of his son James in Wigan’s academy. Luke Ayling also posted a nice message to the former Leeds youngster.
