Georginio Rutter has now spent 12 months at Leeds United and it is fair to say the latter half of that has been far more enjoyable, despite relegation – and Sam Byram says he is a changed man now.
Rutter, 21, has been incredible for Leeds. Whether that is playing as a 10, or as a striker, the Frenchman has had a hand in 14 goals in 26 Championship outings. He got his fifth goal last time out, on Saturday.
It comes after a club-record move to Elland Road from Hoffenheim last summer. He played just 13 times, one Premier League start – failing to score, one assist for Jack Harrison in the last game of the season.
But this season, he has constantly created chances and become a fan favourite – his one-man show against Watford, his winner against Leicester. Fans loved his guitar or Harry Potter-inspired celebrations.
Speaking on KageyVision’s YouTube channel, Leeds star Byram explained of how when he first joined, Rutter was shy and quiet – but as he shines on the pitch, so does his personality blossom off of it.
“Always laughing, always joking. When I first came, he was a bit shy. But he’s really come out of his shell. A top, top guy. It’s not an act, he’s a lovely guy and I can see why the fans would like him,” Byram said.

Hardly a surprise that to begin with, Rutter was not the man he is now. A new country, unable to speak the language, weighed down by the pressure of a club-record fee, unable to prove his worth by playing.
Now, a man that can speak English, given the game time to shine and with the benefit of facing weaker opposition in the Championship – Rutter is starring. He is guiding us into a promotion, or play-off fight.
