‘It set us up’… BBC pundit says 23-year-old’s decision making was so much better for Leeds United last night

Leeds United were hugely dominant despite only beating Bristol City 1-0 last night.

The Whites could have won by four or five on another night but will be delighted at picking up their fifth league win in a row since the turn of the New Year thanks to Willy Gnonto’s goal just after the break.

When in possession, Bristol City really struggled to play through Leeds‘ high press and were caught out on a number of occasions inside their own half, particularly by Crysencio Summerville.

But Leeds were also very comfortable at playing around Bristol City, too, with Illan Meslier, Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu grinding their frontmen down at the back by often keeping the ball amongst themselves.

And speaking on BBC Radio Leeds after the match, pundit Jon Newsome singled out Meslier’s distribution in particular for praise, claiming it was so much better than over the last few weeks.

Newsome praises Meslier decision making

He said: “The best chance they had across the whole game was when Mehmeti made the run in behind Rodon and got the strike off, it was a really good save from Meslier.

“He has had his critics this season and pulls a good save off. His distribution was better, he recognised the high press and his decision to go long was better than it has been. It set us up for some good attacking play.”

Meslier has come in for some criticism over the last few weeks for some of his performances, with Newsome having been one of them, specifically regarding his distribution.

Former Leeds defender Aidy White also believes he has been a little under-par lately, but last night should give him confidence for a few reasons.

Despite having very little to do, Meslier pulled off a vital save in the second half to stop Bristol City’s only real chance in the game. Those are the sort of contributions he needs to be making on a weekly basis.
