Isaac Schmidt left Leeds United on loan this summer, joining Werder Bremen for the 2025/26 season after his difficult last campaign.

Isaac Schmidt looked like an exciting new signing for Leeds United last summer. But the Swiss international endured a nightmare debut season at Elland Road, failing to start a single league match under Daniel Farke.

In the end, the 25-year-old made just 12 appearances in the Championship last season. After promotion to the Premier League, though, it always looked likely that Schmidt would leave the club this summer.

Werder Bremen signed Schmidt on a season-long loan this summer and he’s since played one match, scoring in a 3-3 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.

Isaac Schmidt wants permanent Werder Bremen move from Leeds United

Schmidt was in action for Switzerland on Monday night. He came off the bench to help his country beat Jaka Bijol’s Slovenia 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier, and he’ll now return to Germany and hope to work his way into the Bremen XI for their next Bundesliga match against Monchengladbach this weekend.

Speaking to BILD, and as relayed by multiple other outlets, Schmidt has now admitted that he’s looking for a home in Bremen and that he wants to play for the club long-term too.

The full-back said: “I’m currently looking for an apartment so I can really settle in Bremen. I’d like to play for Werder for a longer period. That’s my big goal. Of course, I know that a lot will depend on my performance here.”

Did Daniel Farke want to keep Isaac Schmidt at Leeds United?

Full-backs were a real priority in the transfer market for Leeds going into this summer. Schmidt was one of the few on the books at Thorp Arch going into the pre-season and it was reported that Farke wanted to keep Schmidt at Leeds United for this season.

But Schmidt was keen to keep his place in the Swiss set up ahead of the 2026 World Cup and so he pushed for a loan move away from the club, and is now seemingly pushing for a permanent move away.

Thankfully, though, Leeds United signed James Justin from Leicester City. Capable of playing on both flanks, Justin looks like an upgrade on Schmidt for sure, and his signing could pave the way for Schmidt to eventually stay with Bremen, or to join another club permanently.
