Brenden Aaronson has told reporters – as quoted by Goal – that he is simply focusing on his time with USA ahead of their end-of-season fixtures rather than his future at Leeds United, amid reports he has a relegation release clause.
Aaronson, 22, clocked up 40 appearances for Leeds during the 2022-23 campaign. But that does not tell the entire story. Jesse Marsch’s first signing, for a fee of £25m from Salzburg, Aaronson managed just one goal for the club.
Indeed, only four goal involvements – three assists in his 40 matches. The 29-time USA star has a contract at Leeds until the summer of 2027 – but, 90Min say that within that contract is a relegation release clause worth £25million.
Aaronson is currently on international duty with the USMNT, who have a busy schedule over the next four weeks. They face Mexico in a Nations League semi ahead of a possible final. Then, three CONCACAF Gold Cup fixtures.
Speaking to reporters while with his country’s squad, alongside Weston McKennie but not Tyler Adams who is still injured after a hamstring operation, Aaronson commented on his future. He said he is simply focusing on the USA.
“I’m sorry, but I’m with the national team. I just want to focus on that. That’s where my thoughts are. That’s the only thing I’m focused on. I’m just focused on the next game in Mexico, trying to win this one and go into the next one.”

The issue Aaronson has, is that he failed to impress in the Premier League and cost a pretty penny. Premier League clubs will hardly be convinced – with Leeds wanting the same fee the club paid for him, given the release clause.
A report from 90Min does state that Newcastle United have shown interest in Aaronson, but that they are going to focus their initial attempts to sign a playmaker on James Maddison. It might be Aaronson is at Leeds next season.
