Illan Meslier hints at Leeds stay by naming something he loves about new manager

Illan Meslier has hinted to LUTV – as per the YEP – he could stay at Leeds United this summer, by underlining his delight at playing the way Daniel Farke wants Leeds to play – and gave his thoughts on the opener against Cardiff.

Meslier, 23, is widely expected to leave Elland Road in August after Leeds completed a move to sign goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Newcastle United. However, he started over Darlow on Sunday – although, Darlow has only just joined.

Indeed, Darlow returned home from America and signed for Leeds the next day, before joining the travelling Leeds squad to take on Hearts on Sunday. He remained an unused sub, as Farke’s men secured a 1-0 win at Tynecastle.

So, with Darlow on board and Meslier struggling towards the end of last season, the Frenchman is likely to be exiting Elland Road this summer. But, he spoke to LUTV and shared his delight at Farke’s way of playing, and Cardiff City.

“Yeah absolutely, I love it, the style, how we play. To play short from behind, with good movement from everyone. I think it is attractive football and everyone is just enjoying how we play football and that’s the most important.

“My academy was based on the floor, it’s just super exciting to play at this level with this type of manager. It will be a tough season, a long season. We are all excited to start next week with the first game, hopefully three points.”

Following the end of the season, Meslier did not post any kind of message on social media to fans and that might have been a hint, too. He might still be keen on an exit. Any small Euro 2024 hopes die with Championship football.

But his comments suggest he likes the way Farke has got Leeds playing and that could tempt him to remain this summer. Certainly, his comments on the game against Cardiff suggest he is at least staying until next weekend.

The Athletic say that Leeds will let him go if a decent offer arrives for his services – but are not actively pushing him out of the club. The signing of Darlow might change that. Meslier has said he would love to join a club like Chelsea.
