Illan Meslier compares Leeds United star to Thierry Henry after win against Derby

Leeds United have strengthened their position at the top of the Championship table after Sunday’s win over Derby County, with other results going their way on Sunday.

Leeds currently find themselves embroiled in a four-way race to secure automatic promotion. Chris Wilder and Sheffield United are Leeds’ main competitors, but they were held to a 1-1 draw against West Brom.

Burnley played after Leeds on Sunday, only managing a 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough. Sunderland could not even manage a draw as Tom Cannon scored an injury-time winner for struggling Stoke on Sunday.

It meant that Leeds’ 15th Championship win of the season and 14th clean sheet has propelled Leeds to two points clear of Sheffield United. Burnley have only conceded nine goals, but are three points behind.

Brenden Aaronson posts on Instagram after scoring Leeds winner

Aaronson has an aim of 15 goals and 15 assists this season, a total of 30 involvements. But after the first half of the season, Aaronson only has nine goal involvements though he did score his seventh of 2024-25.

A gorgeous Leeds move that started with Illan Meslier before subs Manor Solomon and Joel Piroe worked together to provide for Aaronson, who took a touch before finishing past goalkeeper Jacob Zetterstrom.

Aaronson took to Instagram after scoring the only goal of the game, posting a series of pictures along with the caption: “MOT”. It sees Aaronson remain in second place for Leeds involvements this season.

Throughout his years at Arsenal, Premier League legend Henry was renowned for opening up his body when cutting in from the left and side-footing the ball under an on-rushing goalkeeper for The Gunners.

Meslier, being a Frenchman, compared Aaronson to Henry by commenting the latter’s well-renowned nickname on Aaronson’s Instagram. He posted “Titi”, while other Leeds players also commented.

Aaronson has spoken of the importance of his relationship with Leeds fans as he continues his pursuit of winning their love back after leaving on loan. Scoring winners like he did against Derby will help no end.
