‘I think’: Sky Sports pundit says Leeds player has made big error, blasts agent for bad advice

Sky Sports pundit Jobi McAnuff says Wilfried Gnonto has made a huge mistake in how he has gone about forcing a Leeds United exit.

McAnuff was speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Leeds’ 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion on Friday, with Gnonto’s future a major talking point.

According to the Athletic, Gnonto submitted a written transfer request to Leeds just hours before their clash with the Baggies at Elland Road.

It is the latest attempt from the 19-year-old to push for a transfer away from the Whites, having refused to play in matches against Shrewsbury Town and Birmingham City last week.

Gnonto has been told to train away from the rest of the first team squad at Thorp Arch, though Leeds remain insistent he is not for sale.

Former Reading midfielder McAnuff believes Gnonto has gone about the situation in all the wrong ways, and says he should’ve got his ‘head down’ and worked hard regardless of his intent to secure a move.

He said: “Certainly, with Gnonto, it’s a very different situation. We have all been in that situation where there is interest from another football club, and he is now sitting in the Championship, and he feels it is his only way to get a move.

“For me, it’s not the right way to do it. You get your head down. He was one of the only shining lights last season, in a disappointing season, and he was one Leeds fans felt could really help push to get them back in.

“I think he has been badly advised, I really do. He is a young boy, and we have to remember that. It would have been his benefit if he got his head down, did his talking on the football pitch, and then if Leeds get an offer they can’t refuse, then you get your move.”

Everton are expected to submit a fresh offer for Gnonto having seen four turned down already by Leeds, the most recent of which was £25 million, as per Sky Sports.

Leeds remain intent on keeping him despite his desire to move, but will face a big dilemma after supporters made their feelings known on the situation last night.

To avoid any animosity after the window, Leeds should seriously consider selling him if an offer of £30 million arrives, as it would really enable them to reinvest it back into the squad.
