Preston North End boss Ryan Lowe has admitted that Illan Meslier’s red card during Leeds United’s 2-1 defeat at Deepdale was a “bit soft” – but said Preston have had many go against them this term.
Leeds’ run of recent results took another hit as Meslier saw red, a moment which turned out to be the key moment in an otherwise dull affair. Meslier collected a ball from a cross, doing well under pressure.
Certainly, Meslier has been excellent this season and might have been on his way to a second clean sheet in two games. He reacted angrily to the challenge of Ben Whiteman. Miluton Osmajic got involved.
Meslier took it to a new level, pushing Osmajic in the face – perhaps, more because of his height rather than actually going to push the Preston man facially. But, and technically, it was a red card offence.
Meslier was shown a red and will now be banned for the next three matches. Two league games against West Brom and Birmingham, and the FA Cup clash vs Peterborough. Preston boss Lowe gave his take.
“I don’t care because we have seen previous opponents not get reds this season. If it was my team I would have considered it a bit soft, but you can’t raise your hands,” Lowe said, as quoted by Leeds Live.

It was a red. Even as Lowe says, soft, it is a red card. Had it been the other way round, us Leeds fans would have been screaming for the player in question to be given his marching orders. A big blow.
Things like this happen during a season and that is why Karl Darlow was brought in at the beginning of the campaign. Daniel Farke is not happy though. A rush of blood described as a “moment of madness”.
