Leeds United boss Daniel Farke has explained exactly why his side lost 2-1 at Preston North End this afternoon.
Leeds United lost 2-1 at Deepdale in what was a very long and tough afternoon for Farke‘s side.
The first half was a cagey one with very little to note, but the game sprung into life in the 53rd minute when Illan Meslier was shown a straight red card for raising his hand to Preston attacker Milutin Osmajic.
Alan Browne headed the home side in front just minutes later before Leeds levelled things thanks to a Pascal Struijk penalty.
But Liam Millar scored with a late, curling effort to seal the win for Preston, leaving Leeds United still in 3rd place of the table and still seven points behind Ipswich Town ahead of their crunch match vs Leicester City this evening.
Daniel Farke critical of wasteful Leeds
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Farke revealed that Leeds’ wasteful attacking play was behind their defeat at Deepdale.
He said:
“In the first half I was just pleased with our defending, because we defended all the set pieces, we kept them [Preston] relatively quiet, they had two half-chances in the first half, but I was not pleased with our offensive game and I think in our offensive positions we were not ready for the battle.”
The Leeds boss added:
“We didn’t deserve to lose this game because of our mentality in the second half, but we deserved it because the first half our offensive game wasn’t good enough.”
In today’s game, Leeds had 11 shots but only two of them were on target, as per Sofascore.
Leeds’ attacking inconsistencies remain ahead of West Brom crunch match
Leeds, although they’re in a good position in the league and look strong under Farke, remain inconsistent.
They’ve gone from thumping Ipswich Town 4-0 to losing rather easily away at Preston North End, which will obviously be frustrating to everyone involved.
And matters don’t get any easier for Farke when he takes his side to West Brom on Friday night where Leeds face a familiar face in Carlos Corberan.
The former Leeds coach has made promotion dark horses out of West Brom who, like Preston, will punish Leeds if they don’t take their chances on the day.
The likes of Joel Piroe, Georginio Rutter, and Crysencio Summerville among others will need to be much sharper at The Hawthorns on Friday night, with a win here able to further embed Leeds in the Championship’s top three.
