Leeds United left it late to secure all three points on Monday evening and keep the pressure on in the race for automatic promotion and the race for the Championship title – eventually beating Hull 3-1.
Leeds went into the game after watching Leicester come from behind to beat Norwich City, and then Ipswich scoring an injury-time winner to beat Southampton at Portman Road. It meant a win was crucial.
They did just that, but left it very late. Sam Byram opened the scoring, heading home at the back post after Cree Summerville‘s shot was parried. Fabio Carvalho, a Leeds target in January, equalised for Hull.
Leeds were frustrated in the second half, playing well below what Leeds fans have come to expect from Daniel Farke’s side. Hull has chances, too. Mateo Joseph came off the bench and injected some energy.
Crysencio Summerville comments on taking Leeds penalty
He hit the post, but it was Summerville that got the deciding goal – scoring from the penalty spot. Dan James scored a third from just inside Hull’s half, after goalkeeper Ryan Allsopp went up for a corner.
A huge win for Leeds, pushing the Whits back into the top two. Summerville spoke to Sky Sports after the match, after deciding to wrestle the ball off £16m Joel Piroe to score. Piroe is normally the penalty taker.
Piroe had not started the game and came on as a sub – and while Piroe has scored a late penalty after coming on as a sub to beat Preston beforehand, Summerville chose to take the responsibility, scoring.
“I felt good in the game. We had a few chances and I thought, this one is mine. So I took it, and I’m happy with the goal today. Very big three points, undefeated at home. To take all three points is amazing.”

If Summerville’s shot, which was parried before Byram nodded in, counts as an assist – he has taken his tally to a huge 28 goals and assists in what was his 40th outing of the season, in all competitions.
An incredible tally, that really deserves to come in a promotion-winning side. Whether Leeds can get over the line with six league games to play now, remains to be seen. Summerville’s future now depends on it.
Should Leeds fail to get into the Premier League, you can expect clubs to come calling and given his form – they will be top-tier sides, towards the top half of the Premier League. Leeds must try to keep him.
But gaining promotion will play a major part in that – for a player Watford manager Tom Cleverley recently said is the best player in the entire division. Summerville’s penalty was a massive goal for Leeds.
