Leeds United were left frustrated on Saturday afternoon as West Brom prevented Daniel Farke’s side from another Championship win at Elland Road, the game ending in a 1-1 draw.
After stunning wins over Sunderland and Sheffield United, Leeds faced what is likely to be the toughest of the remaining 12 fixtures with West Brom coming to Yorkshire. Junior Firpo gave Leeds the lead early on.
But Darnell Furlong headed in an equaliser before half-time. The Whites had chances, with Mateo Joseph hitting the bar and plenty of others having chances to score only to be foiled by Tony Mowbray’s men.
Leeds remain in first place but what was a five-point lead over Sheffield United has been cut short to just three points. Chris Wilder’s Blades secured a 2-1 away win at Loftus Road, getting the better of QPR.
How do Leeds compare to Marcelo Bielsa’s promotion season
With 35 games played and only 11 to go, Leeds have a whopping 76 points. Just three defeats all season, winning 22 times and boasting an enormous goal difference of 50 despite failing to win on Saturday.
At the same stage back in 2019-20, the season in which Marcelo Bielsa guided Leeds to promotion, it was ironically West Brom leading the way and four points clear of Leeds who remained in second position.
After 35 games in 2019-20, Leeds had just 65 points – 11 less than The Whites do now. Not only that, but Leeds had lost eight games and a goal difference of only 20, a whole 30 goals less than Farke’s Leeds.
| Season | Games | Position | Wins | Draws | Losses | GD | Points |
| 2019-20 under Marcelo Bielsa | 35 | 2nd | 19 | 8 | 8 | 20 | 65 |
| 2024-25 under Daniel Farke | 35 | 1st | 22 | 10 | 3 | 50 | 76 |
How Leeds compare to Daniel Farke’s first season at Elland Road
Leeds fans may be waking up on Monday morning feeling a sense of frustration that The Whites failed to score a second goal and secure a win against West Brom, but seven points from the last three is superb.
Leeds remain in the driving seat in the race for promotion, stretching their unbeaten run to 17 matches in England’s second tier. Farke last watched Leeds lose back in November, against Blackburn at Ewood Park.
Compared to last season and Farke’s first year as Leeds manager and even then, there is improvement. The Whites had won the same amount of matches with 22, but had lost twice as much as this campaign.
| Season | Games played | Position | Wins | Draws | Losses | GD | Points |
| 2023-24 under Daniel Farke | 35 | 3rd | 22 | 7 | 6 | 37 | 73 |
| 2024-25 under Daniel Farke | 35 | 1st | 22 | 10 | 3 | 50 | 76 |
So, there may be a feeling of frustration and concern among Leeds fans but compared to last season in which The Whites reached the magical 90-point mark, Leeds are three points better off and two positions.
Next up for Farke and Leeds is a trip to Portsmouth on Sunday lunchtime, before facing rivals Millwall in the middle of the week following the clash at Pompey – who Leeds drew 3-3 with on the opening day.
