Jesse Marsch has issued his verdict on the signings Leeds United made in 2022 summer transfer window, as he named three additions he believes had huge potential.
Jesse Marsch ultimately only got one summer transfer window at the helm at Leeds. And there was plenty of cautious optimism amongst the fans heading into that period after the Whites had stayed up on the final day of the previous season.
While we said goodbye to Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, their departures opened the door for the club to make a raft of new additions.
Jesse Marsch believes Marc Roca and Luis Sinisterra have high ceilings
The likes of Rasmus Kristensen and Tyler Adams had worked with Marsch before. Meanwhile, Brenden Aaronson, Marc Roca and Luis Sinisterra also arrived for significant money. And the window ended with Willy Gnonto joining on a chaotic deadline day.

The moves obviously did not work out. Adams and Sinisterra were bright, but were just as likely to be on the sidelines injured as they were to be out on the pitch. Aaronson really struggled after a bright start. Roca hardly pulled up many trees. And Kristensen had a torrid time against almost every winger he faced.
Gnonto was the only success story. And Marsch held off on bringing him into the team for some time.
Nevertheless, speaking on Monday Night Football (broadcast on 19/2; 23:03), Marsch insisted that he was happy with the window Leeds had.
“Yeah I liked all the players we brought in. And when I say we, I know a lot of times in England, we talk about the manager’s transfers, we didn’t operate that way. As a club, we really made decisions,” he said.
“And obviously it looks like it’s my transfers when it’s an American and some Red Bull players, but I think we all felt internally, as we were shifting the team and the style of football, that having some players like Luis Sinisterra, Marc Roca and Willy Gnonto, that could meet the standards of how we wanted to play the game and believe that had a high ceiling for how we develop them, along with some players that had been around the system, was a good recipe to try to build a team that was going to be successful moving forward.”
Many of those summer signings look unlikely to play for Leeds again
Marsch’s comments about Roca and Sinisterra seem particularly interesting. Sinisterra, in fairness, did look dangerous when he was fit. And only Rodrigo scored more often in the Premier League.
Roca meanwhile, was very good at times alongside Adams. And perhaps his best display came in the home win against Nottingham Forest alongside Weston McKennie. But the issue is that it is hard to think of many contenders for the Spaniard’s best performance.
Sinisterra’s time at Leeds is now over. But Roca is on loan at Real Betis. Betis are interested in signing Roca permanently. But there is a chance that they do not have the funds to do a deal.
It is hard to see Roca playing for Leeds again. And it is a similar story for the likes of Kristensen and Aaronson.
Ultimately, there is probably a feeling amongst everyone that the fewer reminders around the club of the 2022/23 season, the better.
