He’s the Leeds United legend with the most England caps, a record that might never be beaten

Leeds United have had many representatives in the England team over the years, but who has picked up the most caps while playing for the Whites?

The 2026 World Cup is quickly approaching and soon all eyes of the football world will focus on international football.

Leeds United could have several representatives at the competition in North America, with Brenden Aaronson and Ao Tanaka’s nations already qualified.

However, it’s unlikely that Daniel Farke’s team will have a representative in the England squad, unless Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jayden Bogle or Sean Longstaff have incredible seasons and there’s an injury crisis for Thomas Tuchel.

Yet, Leeds have had several players in the Three Lions set-up in the past, though none got as many caps as the legendary Jack Charlton.

Jack Charlton has more England caps while playing for Leeds than any other player

Jack Charlton was such an incredible person that he is not only an icon in England, but in Ireland as well, after managing them to a quarter-final finish at Italia ’90.

Though born and raised in Ashington, Northumberland, Charlton arrived in Leeds when he was 15 years old and would never leave during his entire playing career.

The classy centre-back made his debut in 1952 and didn’t hang up the boots until two decades later in 1973.

Unsurprisingly, Charlton is Leeds’ record appearance-maker with a remarkable 773 games, beating out Billy Bremner by one, and even managed to score 96 goals.

During those years, he made 35 appearances for England and was, of course, in the heart of defence alongside Bobby Moore when England won the World Cup in 1966.

Though Charlton made more appearances for England than any other Leeds player, it’s surprising that it wasn’t actually more. In fact, he didn’t even make his international debut until he was 29 in 1965.

Sir Alf Ramsey drafted him into partner Moore, and it proved to be a masterstroke.

Charlton isn’t the most capped Leeds player, though, as that honour falls to South Africa’s Lucas Radebe, who was capped 69 times while in Yorkshire.

Every Leeds United player to get an England cap

Leeds have had 33 players who have played for England while at Elland Road, with a total of 341 caps between them.

Kalvin Phillips was the last Leeds player to play for England. He picked up an impressive number of caps in a short time.

However, given Leeds’ current position as a club fighting for Premier League survival, it seems unlikely that any player will get close to breaking Charlton’s record any time soon.
