‘He’s growing’: BBC pundit cannot believe the difference in 21-year-old Leeds United player from last season

Jon Newsome has hailed the way Georginio Rutter has turned his Leeds United career around in just a matter of months.

Newsome was speaking on BBC Radio Leeds following the Whites’ impressive 1-0 win at Leicester City, in which Rutter was the difference between the two sides thanks to his 58th minute winner.

Rutter endured a really tough first few months at Elland Road following his arrival from Hoffenheim. Incredibly, he played under four different managers despite only having joined in January.

As such, Rutter was limited to just the odd cameo appearance here and there, meaning he was never able to really show why Leeds paid so much money to bring him to England.

However, following Leeds’ relegation, and Daniel Farke’s appointment as manager, Rutter has gone from strength-to-strength. He is now arguably the best all round player in the Championship.

Newsome hails Rutter turnaround at Leeds

Newsome is ‘delighted’ at the way Rutter has managed to turnaround his career at Leeds, having initially looked ‘out of his depth’ at times last season.

He said: “I have said it before, he’s not put the price tag on his head, he was out of his depth last year. He came in as a young lad, completely different environment, different way of life, away from home in a struggling side in the Premier League.

“The Premier League is a step up from this, a massive step up. But he can only play in the games he’s playing in, and he’s now playing with confidence, he’s growing in stature. He’s understanding what the game is about.

“Couple of things tonight, tried a little pirouette outside our penalty box. Fair play to him, he’s realised that, two months ago he might’ve stood on the halfway line and threw his arms up in the air, but instead he reacted and chased the Leicester player back and win the ball back. I am delighted for the lad as he comes across as a really great kid.”

Rutter a class above

It is evident for all to see that Rutter has really come into his own this season both on and off the pitch, with his confidence levels sky high at the moment.

After barely being able to speak the language back in January, Rutter is now an extremely competent English speaker and little things such as that have clearly helped him.

He is now transferring that confidence off the pitch onto it and with three goals and five assists already this season, he could end up with some serious numbers by May.
