Leeds United had some real gems during Marcelo Bielsa’s reign. Some have gone on to bigger and better. Others have fallen off.

Leeds United are searching for a return to the Premier League, what will be five years on from their fairy-tale promotion under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020.

Daniel Farke is the man trying to replicate Bielsa’s achievements at Elland Road. He currently has his side sitting in 1st place of the Championship table after Leeds United beat Derby County 1-0 in their last outing.

Brenden Aaronson was on the scoresheet as the Whites opened up a two point lead over Sheffield United who remain in 2nd place of the table.

Next up for Leeds is a New Year’s Day game against Blackburn Rovers at Elland Road. Rovers currently sit in 5th place but are a staggering 17 points behind Leeds.

Farke and indeed the players will go down in Leeds folklore if they can earn promotion this season, as did Bielsa and his players at the time.

What is former Leeds United man Tyler Roberts up to these days?

One of the Leeds players who helped earn promotion in the 2019/20 season was Tyler Roberts.

The Welshman’s time at Leeds United was blighted by injury, featuring 108 times in a five year spell at the club, scoring nine and assisting 10.

Roberts showed definite glimpses of a top player during his time at Elland Road, so much so that Bielsa often spoke positively about the now 25-year-old.

Bielsa said of Roberts back in October 2021: “I, in particular, have a lot of confidence in his resources.

“I feel that he is a player who can unbalance and I hope he can evolve and take a leading role in our team. He has taken a step forward.”

But Roberts has endured something of a fall from grace since leaving Leeds permanently in 2023, currently playing on loan at Northampton Town in League One.

Tyler Roberts can’t get on the scoresheet for latest club Northampton Town

Roberts managed 21 total appearances for Birmingham City before they decided to send him out on loan to League One rivals Northampton Town.

So far this season, Roberts has failed to score in 16 league appearances for the Cobblers who sit in 19th place of the table, with Roberts boasting just the two assists to his name.

On a positive, he’s been very involved this season, now being one league game away from matching his record of 17 with Birmingham City last time round.

But the goals have long dried up. Roberts didn’t score in all competitions last season and hasn’t scored in any competition this season, with his last goal coming on loan at QPR during the 2022/23 Championship campaign.
