Leeds United leapfrogged Southampton into second place in the Championship on Tuesday and are well in the race for automatic promotion – and Tim Sherwood thinks they might just steal second.
A 4-0 win over Swansea City saw Leeds win seven League games in a row, a sixth clean sheet in that run. But it was made even better when hearing that Southampton had lost 3-1 to Bristol City on Tuesday.
The Saints have lost their incredible unbeaten run of 25 games, ahead of tonight’s tricky away trip to West Brom. Carlos Corberan could do Leeds a favour by taking points off of Russell Martin’s Saints.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football pod, Sherwood was asked about the promotion race in the Championship – and he is confident Leicester have run away with it. The Foxes sit 12 ahead of Leeds.
He feels Ipswich have tailed off, though he was speaking ahead of Ipswich’s impressive 4-0 away win over Millwall on Wednesday night. Sherwood though, believes Leeds will pip Southampton to second.

“There are four teams that are outstanding, the rest are average,” Sherwood said. “Automatic spots, Ipswich have tailed off. Leeds with the home ground, the fanbase they have – when they get momentum.
“With the support behind them, they will be hard to stop. Leicester are out of sight. Can Southampton hang on in there? I’d probably just go for Leeds at the moment just on the basis of that 12th man.”
Tim Sherwood thinks Leeds will beat Southampton to second
Leeds have been in the media this week after overtaking Southampton, with plenty of pundits talking about the promotion race. Gabby Agbonlahor, perhaps typically, said he’d rather Leeds didn’t go up.
Simon Jordan, the opposite. Southampton boast that crucial game in hand and should they win that, they will still be a point above Leeds. But the momentum, you feel, is currently with Daniel Farke’s side.
