Leeds United attacker Sonny Perkins could leave on loan this summer.
That is according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth, who was speaking on the latest episode of the Inside Elland Road Podcast.
Smyth was assessing the chances of first team involvement for both Mateo Joseph and Perkins this summer, stating the former is the one most likely to break through.
With that in mind, and given how many attacking options Leeds have, there is now a decent possibility Perkins departs on loan before the end of the window.
According to TeamTalk last month, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland are all potential destinations for Perkins if Leeds give him the green light to go.
Smyth says Perkins could leave Leeds on loan
Perkins showed enough evidence last season that U21s football is no longer a challenge for him, and if minutes aren’t going to arrive at Elland Road, a loan is the next best thing for his development.
Smyth said: “Mateo Joseph he is one that we are hearing good noises about this summer. He has impressed in pre-season, from him and Perkins, Perkins is the one who probably goes on loan and Joseph sticks around and I think he might get a chance, he might get more of a chance than he got last season.”
Perkins only arrived at Leeds 12 months ago after opting against extending his contract at West Ham United, whom he progressed through the ranks of.
He scored 13 goals and provided three assists in 23 appearances for Leeds‘ U21s last season, including in six consecutive PL2 games at the start of the season.
The 19-year-old was also handed a couple of opportunities in Leeds’ first team, scoring his first senior goal in stoppage time in a 2-2 draw at Cardiff City in January.
