Gary Neville makes Daniel Farke claim Jamie Carragher could not agree with

Gary Neville choosing Daniel Farke as his Premier League Manager of the Year felt significant because it cut directly against the safer consensus offered by Jamie Carragher and Patrick Vieira.

Carragher backed Mikel Arteta and Vieira leaned towards Arteta and Unai Emery, but Neville recognised the scale of the transformation Farke has overseen at Leeds after months where his future looked bleak.

It is impossible not to love Daniel Farke 😆

The fire beast with some more magic!

On Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Neville choosing manager Farke stood out immediately because Carragher and Patrick Vieira both opted for more established Premier League contenders.

Neville’s decision carried more weight because Farke entered this season with major doubts surrounding both his Leeds future and his Premier League credentials. Yet, Farke has blown those concerns away.

Daniel Farke looked vulnerable earlier in the season

The pressure around Farke earlier in the campaign was real, particularly after inconsistent performances raised fresh concerns about whether he could succeed long term in the Premier League.

The hesitation reflects lingering concerns from his previous Premier League record at Norwich City, where Farke suffered relegation in both top-flight campaigns.

Norwich won only six of their 49 Premier League matches under him across the 19-20 and 21-22 seasons, which left lasting questions over whether his possession-heavy approach could survive at a higher level.

Now, Leeds are planning to hold fresh talks with Farke over a new contract. The reason The 49ers have not yet handed him a new deal is because they wanted Leeds to achieve Premier League safety, first.

Leeds have produced European-level form in 2025

The strongest part of Neville’s argument is that Leeds have genuinely performed at a level comparable with clubs chasing European qualification since the turn of the year.

Their points return in the second half of the season places them alongside several established Premier League sides competing for continental football. More importantly, Leeds no longer look vulnerable.

The defensive organisation has improved significantly, the midfield balance is stronger, and Leeds have become far harder to play through in transition.

It directly addresses the criticism that followed Farke throughout his Norwich years. His Leeds side still dominates possession, but there is now greater control without the ball and far more physicality.

Carragher disagreeing may actually strengthen Neville’s point

There is no controversy in selecting Arteta or Emery as elite managers because both have already proven themselves consistently at the top level. Neville choosing Farke because he has overachieved.

GIVE DANIEL FARKE A NEW DEAL, NOW!

Leeds United are mathematically safe from relegation.

That is what makes the debate interesting. Farke is no longer being discussed as the coach who struggled with Norwich. He is being compared directly against managers competing for the Champions League.

Farke himself has attempted to calm speculation around his future by insisting his focus remains entirely on Leeds and the project already underway at Elland Road.

Arteta and Emery remain easier selections because their status is already established, but Neville has seen something different. Daniel Farke has not simply revived Leeds this season. He has rebuilt his own Premier League reputation at the same time.
