Four selection dilemmas Daniel Farke faces at Millwall as quartet of signings push for full Leeds debuts

Leeds United return to action following the international break on Sunday with a trip to Millwall.

After a chaotic first month of the season, in which Daniel Farke was often unable to fill his bench, Leeds should have a strong squad ready for their away match at the Den.

Leeds completed a flurry of new signings in the final week of the window who will now all be pushing for their full debuts, while there could also be some returns from injury.

Farke will have to manage his squad carefully in the coming weeks as Leeds face a busy calendar of Championship matches.

So with that in mind, here is a look at four selection dilemmas facing him on Sunday.

Djed Spence vs Luke Ayling

In the eyes of many supporters this feels like a no brainer, but from a manager’s perspective it is not so easy to drop your captain.

However, after signing from Tottenham Hotspur and enjoying a promising 10 minute debut against Sheffield Wednesday, Spence simply must get the nod over Ayling.

Spence has not come to Elland Road to sit on the bench and he should offer a completely new dimension to Leeds’ attack from right-back with his pace and dribbling.

Sam Byram vs Jamie Shackleton

Shackleton has stood in admirably across the last game and a half at left-back but will now face a fight for his place as players return from injury.

Byram is among those expected to be fit after his fitness issue just before the break having started the season well following his arrival on a free transfer.

As hard as it may be to drop Shackleton, it would make sense to bring Byram straight back in to provide Leeds with a more natural left-back.

Glen Kamara/Ilia Gruev vs Archie Gray

It will be interesting to see what sort of condition Gray is in this weekend after being withdrawn from the England U19s squad this month.

Gray started all seven of Leeds’ matches in all competitions across August but it is important his workload is managed given he is only 17.

Both Kamara and Gruev got valuable minutes while away on international duty with their respective countries and so will be keen to come straight in on Sunday.

Jaidon Anthony vs Wilfried Gnonto/Georginio Rutter

After his deadline day arrival from Bournemouth, Anthony is available for selection for the first time at his new side at the weekend.

Having started three of Bournemouth’s opening four games, Anthony will need no time to get up to speed and so will be pushing for a start in his favourite position on the left.

It is difficult to see Farke wanting to drop Wilfried Gnonto but another option could be a slight reshuffle in the front four, dropping Georginio Rutter to the bench.

That could see Joel Piroe start as a nine, with Crysencio Summerville just behind, and Gnonto and Anthony on either flank. Plenty of options for Farke, though.
