Five former Leeds United players from way back who are still playing today

Here are some Leeds United names of old who are still playing to this very day.

Leeds United under Daniel Farke are looking to get back to the big time, having narrowly missed out in the play-off final last season.

Right now, the Whites sit in 5th place of the Championship table, following a 2-2 draw against Sunderland last time out.

Farke’s side look in good nick but have some key absentees right now, with the injury to Ethan Ampadu set to cause some headaches.

With the international break upon us and no club football to speak of, we’ve taken a look at some Leeds United players of old, who are still playing today…

Jonny Howson

Many Leeds fans will know that former favourite Jonny Howson is still playing, and still playing in the Championship after all these years.

The Leeds academy graduate left in 2012, spending five years with Norwich City before joining Middlesbrough in 2017.

He currently captains Boro at 36 years old, having made 320 total appearances for the club.

Lubomir Michalik

Slovakian centre-back Lubomir Michalik is a real throwback for Leeds United.

The now 41-year-old played for Leeds between 2007 and 2011 but only made 69 appearances for the Whites during that time.

He went on to have further spells in England with Carlisle United and Portsmouth, then venturing to Kazakhstan before starting on a journeyman spell in Slovakian football.

Michalik now plays for seventh-tier side OFK Matúškovo.

Max Gradel

Winger Max Gradel was a real prospect for Leeds United back in the day, scoring 25 and assisting 13 goals in 84 total appearances for the Whites.

He earned an exciting move to St Etienne in 2011 and would score 31 goal in four years at the club, returning to England with Bournemouth in 2015.

The two-time Ivory Coast international hasn’t settled since, and after numerous spells across Europe now plays for Turkish third tier side Amedspor at age 36.

Kasper Schmeichel

A Premier League-winner with Leicester City, Kasper Schmeichel is one of Leeds’ most recognisable former players.

Although he spent just one year with Leeds, Schmeichel went on to prove himself as a top, top goalkeeper with Leicester, making close to 500 appearances in 11 years with the club.

Having had spells with Nice and Anderlecht, the 37-year-old is now the no.1 at Celtic.

Andy Lonergan

Another goalkeeper, and one who it’s hard to believe is still playing in the EFL.

Andy Lonergan, now 40, played for Leeds on two separate occasions; between 2011 and 2012 and then 2018 and 2018.

Also formerly of the like of Liverpool, Wolves, Middlesbrough, and several other clubs, Lonergan is currently a reserve goalkeeper at Wigan Athletic.

His last cup appearance was during the 2020/21 season, and his last league appearance was with Rochdale during the 2018/19 season.
