One of the players on Leeds United’s books facing an uncertain future heading into the summer is Brenden Aaronson, with many supporters surely having little interest in seeing the 23-year-old play for the club again.
Brenden Aaronson was one of the first players to leave Elland Road following relegation. And that departure came despite the attacking midfielder having an incredibly underwhelming season with the Whites, with only a handful of standout performances.
You could have some sympathy for Aaronson’s decision. Union Berlin could offer Champions League football. And the American would have been looking to do all he could to break into the USMNT squad for this year’s Copa America.
Unfortunately for Aaronson, his time out on loan has proved to be disappointing. Union were knocked out of the Champions League group-stages, and it appeared that relegation may be a possibility.
Brenden Aaronson impresses in Union Berlin win
Aaronson was also left out of the most recent USMNT squad. So all signs point to Leeds struggling to find a buyer for the youngster this summer.

But there were brighter signs on Saturday as Union beat Werder Bremen 2-1. And it was Aaronson who scored what proved to be the winner.
It was a smart finish from Aaronson, who played a nice one-two on the edge of the box before firing the ball past the goalkeeper.
What was encouraging was that he appeared to be much more willing to stay on his feet when he was challenged. Few seemed to be more annoyed at how easily Aaronson went to ground last season than his own fans.
There were some nice touches in tight spaces. Meanwhile, Whoscored shows that he won more challenges than any other Union player. And he completed five dribbles – more than double any other player on the pitch.
A lot more to prove before Leeds fans change their mind on youngster
One bright performance will not change a lot for a lot of fans. Ultimately, the players who departed on loan are going to have to work harder to win supporters around if they do come back this summer.
And Aaronson would have an even bigger point to prove given that he was so disappointing after the opening weeks of the season.
But the glimpses of his potential show that, if he does end up staying, there is a player in there somewhere.
