Reported Leeds United target Viktor Gyokeres could now leave Coventry City for free in 2024.
That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who reports Coventry owner Doug King is commanding a ‘huge’ fee to sign Gyokeres this summer, which is warding off potential suitors.
Gyokeres has just 12 months left to run on his deal at the Ricoh Arena and has already publicly made it clear he wishes to move on ahead of the new season in August.
Sporting club de Portugal have been the club most heavily linked this summer, though Romano claims Fulham, Wolves and West Ham are all interested in pursuing a deal.
Leeds were keen on signing Gyokeres back in January but instead opted to move for Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim, and it remains to be seen whether they will return now they have been relegated.
Gyokeres could leave Coventry for free next summer
King has already spoken to the press this week regarding the future of Gyokeres and insists Coventry will not be bullied into selling him on the cheap, regardless of the player’s wishes.
Romano has since backed up this claim, claiming there is now a possibility he will instead depart next year, though the next few days will be vital in deciding his future.
He said: “Viktor Gyökeres future, key hours/days ahead. Decision has not been made by player and his camp — potential free transfer in 2024 being discussed.
“Coventry owner, asking for huge amount with just 1 year left on contract. Fulham, Wolves, West Ham & Sporting are ready to push.”
Given the fee King is demanding this summer, a move to Leeds for Gyokeres now looks out of the question after their relegation.
The best chance they may well have is hoping Gyokeres stays at Coventry, before then getting promoted and looking to snap him up on a free transfer with the offer of Premier League football.
It certainly is looking a long shot now.
