Reported Leeds United transfer target Viktor Gyokeres is keen to leave Coventry City this summer but believes he is currently being priced out of a move.
Gyokeres was speaking in an interview with fotbollskanalen.se, where he opened up on his desire for a new challenge, and how a Premier League move is not necessarily the be-all and end-all.
Sporting CP are, at the moment, the side pressing strongest for Gyokeres and according to reports in Portugal, are willing to pay £17 million.
However, the Coventry Telegraph state that Coventry value the 24-year-old at upwards of £20 million, which prove to be stumbling block on a move this summer.
Gyokeres has just 12 months left to run on his deal at the Sky Blues and this valuation is causing some frustration for the Sweden international.
Gyokeres keen to leave, questions Coventry price tag
Leeds were linked with a move for Gyokeres back in January but instead made the move to sign Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim.
According to Gyokeres himself, he could’ve left Coventry back in the winter but chose to stay after talks with the club, and is hoping that loyalty earns him a move of his choice this summer.
He said: “I only have one year left on the contract, so considering that, it’s quite a lot.
“There are a number of clubs that are interested and Coventry surely want what they want. Then you have to take it accordingly and see when the club feels satisfied.
“But I hope that the club can also think about what I want and what I feel for, and not just about who pays the most.
“I could have gone last winter but chose to stay. The club wanted me to stay the whole season.
“I hope you can cooperate now that the season is over and that you don’t just think about the money, but think about me and my career.
“You can ask the interested clubs that. But I only have one year left on my contract, so considering that, it’s quite a lot.
“It doesn’t really matter as long as it feels good for myself and that that club wants me a lot and chooses to invest in me and not just buy me just because.
“It depends on what kind of club it is and how it looks. It’s not just about the club name.”
Leeds’ relegation to the Championship could well put an end to their interest in Gyokeres, though player sales and investment from 49ers may well mean they have the funds.
It is also encouraging to hear that his next move may well not be the Premier League, though either way, a club competing in European football like Sporting, are likely to have the upper hand anyway.
If the funds are there, Leeds should certainly test the waters. The worst answer they can get is no.
