Fabrizio Romano has reported in the early hours of Thursday that Sporting Lisbon could complete the signing of Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres today – a player that has been regularly linked with Leeds United of late.
Gyokeres, 25, starred for Coventry last season – having a hand in a whopping 34 goals in 50 games for Mark Robins’ side last term, as they reached the play-offs. His form has seen him become a regular with Sweden’s National Team.
TeamTalk reported earlier this year that Leeds were considering a move for Gyokeres, regardless of what division we found ourselves in. The forward finds himself out of contract at the end of the 2023-24 season. A move is likely.
Especially, as Coventry suffered defeat in the Championship play-off final. Promotion might have seen Gyokeres sign a new deal. Now, it looks as if Sporting are ‘close’ – with a possible green light today, in a deal worth £20.5m.
Romano: Sporting Lisbon could sign Gyokeres today amid Leeds links
While Leeds might have continued to target Gyokeres even after relegation, the chances of Gyokeres moving to another second-tier club always seemed unlikely. Especially, at the fee Sporting look as though they are set to pay.
If Leeds were to stand any chance of landing the impressive Swedish striker, it would have had to be with the club still in the Premier League. He will now join a Sporting side in European competition, challenging for silverware.
Sporting have the financial demands to spend as much as they are about to on Gyokeres, largely due to the sale of Pedro Porro to Tottenham. That was an initial loan that is now permanent. Gyokeres is set for a move to Portugal.
