Fabrizio Romano has reported on Twitter that Lazio are set to complete the signing of Leeds United and Newcastle United target Milos Kerkez, as the Serie A side look to strengthen after qualifying for 23-24’s Champions League.

Kerkez, 19, has impressed since swapping Milan for AZ Alkmaar, 18 months ago. The eight-time Hungary star has clocked up 57 games for AZ – 52 of which came in 22-23. He had a hand in 12 goals last term for the Dutch side.

He helped his current side reach the semi-finals of the Conference League, losing to eventual winners West Ham. The Mail reported last week that Leeds and Newcastle are among the clubs to have checked on the £20m talent.

But Romano reported on the weekend the identity of Kerkez’s next club. He says that personal terms are agreed, and all is left to do is for AZ and Lazio to agree a fee. Kerkez Talks between the two clubs will be staged next week.

Kerkez would have been a wonderful signing for Leeds, even in the Premier League. But that is the issue. Kerkez would have only been tempted by a move to Leeds, and Leeds would only go for him – if still in the Premier League.

Even then, AZ’s Kerkez may have preferred Lazio anyway this summer, given they have qualified for next season’s Champions League. Newcastle might still make a late push but it does seem that a move to Lazio is more than likely.

A fee of £20m is high for a player that has only ever really showcased his talent in Dutch football. He will have to make a considerable step up to shine in one of Europe’s top-five leagues. Leeds will be looking at other left-backs.
