Hellas Verona defender Josh Doig looks set to learn his fate this month and it looks like he will be staying in Italy, but joining Serie A side Sassuolo – which sees Leeds United finally miss out on Doig.
Doig, 21, had emerged as a January target for Leeds earlier this month after starring over in Italy, the latest of a number of Scottish players impressing in Serie A – after Lewis Ferguson and Aaron Hickey.
Joining in 2022, he broke into the Verona side and had a hand in six goals in 22 games from left-back. He has remained a key player this season, playing another 14 times in league and cup. Now, he could go.
It had looked as though Marseille were going to strike a deal for him – but Verona dallied on a move and Gennaro Gattuso’s side threw the deal in the bin to pursue others. Rangers, Torino, Monza all linked.
Now, a new update. It looks as if Doig will be off to Sassuolo this month with the two Serie A clubs in talks over a £5m deal. That is according to Gianluca Di Marzio, who says Doig is set to say ‘goodbye’.

A deal is now expected to go through and barring any major hiccups, Doig will be going from a side expected to be in the relegation battle – to one that have often been pushing for European football.
Leeds meanwhile, are yet to do any business despite needing defenders before the start of the window and since losing Luke Ayling and Djed Spence. Charlie Cresswell could follow those two out of the door.
But any chance Leeds had of signing Doig is ending, with the player – who has ‘incredible’ potential as per former Verona boss Gabriele Cioffi – is on his way to Sassuolo to team up with Domenico Berardi.
