Freiburg are interested in signing Wilfried Gnonto this summer but are struggling to meet Leeds United’s £21.5 million asking price.
That is according to Bild, who report Freiburg have earmarked Gnonto as one of their top attacking targets before the window shuts, with the 19-year-old said to be keen on the move.
Due to their struggle to reach an agreement with Leeds, River Plate’s Lucas Beltran has emerged as an alternative target, though the Argentine side are set to demand a similar fee to that of Gnonto.
There is more hope a deal can be done for Beltran, with River Plate reportedly slowly lowering their asking price, which could be a boost to Leeds’ chances of keeping Gnonto.
San Francisco 49ers Enterprises are desperate to keep Gnonto at Elland Road this season and already appear to have staved off interest from Everton, though never say never.
Frebiurg struggling to meet Leeds’ asking price for Gnonto
Gnonto started Leeds’ first Championship game of the season on Sunday as Daniel Farke’s side came from 2-0 down to rescue a late draw with Cardiff City.
In the absence of Patrick Bamford and Georginio Rutter, Gnonto was tasked with leading the line for Leeds and looked impressive in a role that isn’t too familiar with him.
The Italy international helped link play nicely and on another day, would’ve had a couple of goals under his belt and the fact he played the full 90 indicates how much of a big part to play he has if he stays.
Leeds should be in a decent position to keep Gnonto as he still has four years left on his deal and no relegation release clause in his contract.
Based on the evidence of Sunday, Gnonto is still more than fighting for the shirt and Leeds should be looking to keep him at all costs.
