Leeds United’s win over Middlesbrough came at just the right time, when it was needed the most. It now piles the pressure back on Ipswich Town – with Ipswich not in action until after Leeds play again.
The win – secured thanks to goals from Willy Gnonto and Patrick Bamford, and a brace from Crysencio Summerville – sees Leeds go back into second place. The Whites leapfrogged Ipswich, into the top two.
Now of course, Leeds have played an extra game than their three promotion rivals. Leicester remain top on 91 points, one ahead of Leeds but having played only 43 points. The Foxes host Southampton tonight.
Ipswich, meanwhile, are not in action until Saturday when they go to Hull City. Leeds have a real chance to take advantage and go four points clear in second before Ipswich play next, and they have a tough game.
Eddie Gray confident Leeds United can finish in the top two
Going into the game against Boro, automatic hopes looked slim but now – there is every chance Leeds could finish in the top two come the end of the season. Especially, with Summerville back to his best.
Asked on TalkSPORT this morning (23/04, 7.40AM), Leeds legend Eddie Gray was asked if he thinks the Whites will be promoted automatically – and he responded by saying Leicester have the advantage.

“I’m quite confident we can get results. They can still catch us, but the team are playing with a lot of confidence. We can beat any team in the League, but at this stage – you can never tell what happens.
“It happened against Blackburn. It’s advantage Leicester, but we’re still capable of winning our games. The players are playing well, with confidence,” Elland Road icon Gray said about Leeds’ chances of promotion.
What David O’Leary said when asked if the Whites will go up
Leeds are next in action against QPR on Friday night. They take on a side that will have their tails up after beating Preston to win 1-0. The London side sit four points above the drop zone, with two games to play.
O’Leary, the man to guide Leeds to a Champions League semi-final, believes that the Premier League is better with Leeds in it. He says he hopes his old side can get over the line, on TalkSPORT (23/04, 9:13AM).
“I watched the game last night. Absolutely fantastic. Great three points. They are in a similar position in the Championship (comparing to Arsenal’s position in the Premier League), Ipswich, Leicester and Leeds.
Two big clubs going up. The city seems happier when the club is doing really well. I think they are a great fit for the Premier League. Great support. They are a Premier League club. I hope they get over the line.”
