Leeds United secured a crucial 2-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night, but Owls manager Danny Rohl was not happy with Patrick Bamford’s opener – questioning the timing of the goal.
Wednesday had edged the first half but with a clash of heads between Joe Rodon and Junior Firpo meaning there was five minutes of injury time, Leeds took full advantage. Firpo whipped a ball in.
Bamford got on the end of it, tapping home to give us the lead. The timing of the goal was 11 seconds after injury time had finished, just beyond 49 minutes. Willy Gnonto made it two in the second half.
A well-worked goal that saw Bamford hold the ball-up and find Georginio Rutter, who flicked it on for Gnonto – laying on a 16th assist for the Italy star. Rohl spoke to Sky Sports (10.15PM) after the game.
“It is a difficult one, we are disappointed to take nothing. A strong side. All in all, a big fight from our side – a little bit frustrating that it is extra time, after extra time in the first half they score. This is football.”

What Rohl seems to have forgotten, is that the injury time allocated is a minimum of that time – not simply four minutes. So it is well within the laws of the game for Bamford to score in the time he did.
It’s a massive win for Leeds and one step closer to automatic promotion, overtaking Ipswich into 2nd place at least until Saturday lunchtime’s game against Cardiff. Paul Robison thinks we’re going up.
