Despite Leeds United’s ‘efforts’, £7m Tottenham target learning from Marcelo Bielsa won’t be sold

South American outlet Torcedores claims Leeds United are trying to sign Palmeiras left-back Joaquin Piquerez but despite our ‘efforts’ to land the Uruguayan – the Palmeiras board will not sanction his exit.

Piquerez, 25, has been sensational for Brazilian side Palmeiras since joining the club in July 2021. He has played 118 times for them, but during Brazil’s 2023 season – he has starred, clocking up 50 games.

In that time, he has had a hand in 14 goals. Eight goals, six assists. His form has come at the same time that the 13-time Uruguay star has started to work under Marcelo Bielsa, who is now Uruguay manager.

Bielsa has impressed as Uruguay manager, with Piquerez featuring in five of Bielsa’s six games. He was a sub in Uruguay’s famous win over Brazil of late. In the summer, Leeds were linked with the left-back.

Nosso Palmeiras said in the summer that Leeds have made an enquiry, the player is rated at £7m. But, a new report. Torcedores say that ‘despite Leeds’ efforts’, Piquerez will not be sold by the Brazilian side.

What a signing he would be. Piquerez is a top player, a left-back that Leeds have so desperately tried to sign over the years. But, Piquerez is already of Premier League standard and would cost a pretty penny.

According to Goal, Tottenham and Marseille have shown interest in the defender. A fee of £7m seems incredibly cheap for a player of his quality, his experience already and his ability to score and create.

So, Piquerez is a player of enormous talent. Leeds might want him but realistically the only chance we have of enticing him is being in the Premier League – and being able to afford Premier League fees.
